Nancy tells this story about this design: Cardinal Long time ago, Raccoon teased Wolf. Wolf chased Raccoon up into a tree. Fortunately for Raccoon, a limb of the tree branched out over a stream. Wolf grew tired waiting for Raccoon to come down, so he took a nap. Raccoon went to the end of the branch and slipped into the water. Raccoon, upset because he spent so much time treed, decided to teach Wolf a lesson. He gathered mud, carefully placing it on Wolf's sleeping eyes, and quickly ran away. The mud hardened. When Wolf woke up, he thought he was blind! A brown bird heard Wolf crying for help. "Wolf, don't eat me and I will help you see again," he said. Bird pecked at the dry mud on Wolf's eyes. When Wofl could see, he thanked Bird by taking him to a rock streaked with brilliant red. "Paint yourself Bird. People will see you and remember how you helped me. They will call you, Red Bird, the Cardinal."
