Nancy tells this story about this design:
Creepy Crawlies
Long ago, Kanati and Selu, first Cherokee man and woman, had twin boys. These boys were supposed to stay home but they followed Kanati into the woods. They saw their father approach a heavy rock. When he pushed the rock aside, a cave appeared. A deer was called out and he gave his life to feed the people. Kanati rolled the rock back across the entrance to the cave and carried the deer to the house. The boys thought they could hunt the same way, but when they rolled the rock, all the animals rushed out of the cave into the woods. To this day, people have worked hard to hunt animals. The twins went inside the cave and found a lidded basket. They opened it up and all the Creepy Crawlies in the world came out, biting the boys. Kanati, knowing what had happened, came back and said that even the bugs had jobs to do. Girls later, killed too many bugs and now hurt in places boys don't.
