Pineapple
Long ago when sea captains returned home from exotic ports to the Southeastern coast, they often brought pineapples as presents. After a time with their families, a pineapple was put on the gate post signifying the time for friends to come visit. Thus the pineapple has come to represent hospitality. Native people in the contingent United States at the 2000 National Indian Education Association conference voted to include indigenous Hawaiians as members of the organization. The pineapple plays a prominent role in Hawaiian culture.
